Socrates spoke these words in 399 BC to five hundred of his fellow Athenian citizens in the public square as they prepared to sentence him to death for absurd charges of impiety and corrupting the youth. It was in this way that the birthplace of #democracy lost one of its greatest minds and philosophers.
