For as long as cities have existed, there have been thriving civic cultures, as well as cultures that have descended into the type of incivility and toxicity we see, too often, in the public square today. There are historically well-prescribed and practiced ways to revive civic culture, restore good governance and flourishing communities. These are ways that come down to us from great civic leaders, statesmen and wise counsellors (philosophers). In this half hour podcast with Plato's Academy in Athens, Greece, Diane Kalen-Sukra looks at our modern challenges with incivility and the lack of rational discourse in our cities, through the eyes of these historical political and thought leaders. Tune in to hear lessons and actions modern civic leaders and engaged citizens can apply from the past to our present cultural challenges. (27 minutes)
